The History of a Period

The daily events of the war (120 x 162 cm - 1977)

Secret lines tie together this assembly, at one and the same time real and surreal, a great inner circle in which the scenes are conceived.

A large crowd waits on the beach for a single ship that may spirit them away towards the unknown. An arms merchant and a seller of petrol. Fishermen and a flying carpet. A newspaper vendor and a public speaker. Martyrs on the gallows. A monk’s habit blown away by the wind. A pack of cards and a chess-set in the middle. In the foreground a dead man over whom women are weeping. A group of nudes. Europa carried away by the bull. The Tower of Babel and a cedar tree. Cadmus and the alphabet. The daily baking of bread by people who have been punished before a wall, beings projected into space, a green baize gambling table, roulette, millstones, so many items full of allegorical meaning. The whole is held together by line and color, perhaps with moments of folly. This canvas deserves to be gone over centimeter by centimeter.

A street in the capital (130 x 195 cm - 1976)

Here in warm earthy colors is a street thoroughly destroyed. There remain only phantom walls, with a perspective leading to a far away point that recalls a crucifixion. The matter is treated with a rich and abundant color paste.
